The Southern Carolina area is located in the heart of the South Carolina Heritage Corridor. Along this corridor are beautiful nature sites, discovery sites, and state parks, as shown in the maps below.

Here are just some of the many places to visit in the Southern Carolina area:

This museum’s exhibits and displays tell the story of Barnwell from its Native American days to the Gulf War. It also features traveling art exhibits, drama presentations and works by local artists.

Cathedral Bay Heritage Wildlife Preserve

Located in Bamberg County, Cathedral Bay is an excellent example of the Carolina bay phenomenon. Carolina bays are elliptical or oval basins found throughout the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The vast majority of these features are found within North Carolina and South Carolina. Along with their unusual shape, bays have several other features in common. Denmark Historic District

Enjoy shopping or browsing in an old-time five and dime, or wander through floors of antiques in the AT&T building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A restored sign shop now houses an art gallery and there's a hardware store that offers everything from lumber to fine china. The Mennonite bakery offers savory home baked breads, which can be enjoyed in the gazebo at Harrison Park. The Jim Harrison Gallery on Main Street offers displays of this internationally known artist. The town comes alive each spring with the Dogwood Festival.

Hampton County Museum

The Hampton County Museum in Hampton is located in the old jailhouse in Hampton County. The museum contains an extensive collection of Civil War memorabilia, including various maps and uniforms, as well as from World War I, World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Photographs of the county, its founders and important historical figures are also on display.

Healing Springs

Artesian wells supply legendary mineral waters to pilgrims seeking help for all kinds of ailments. Historical records and legend date the springs back to 1770 when Indians considered the waters sacred and bathed in them for healing when sick or hurt. During the American Revolution, four mortally wounded British soldiers were left here with two able bodied men to care for them until they died and were buried. Six months later, all six returned to their garrison in Charleston, further perpetuating the springs' legend for healing.

Jim Harrison Gallery

Jim Harrison's paintings of farm landscapes, country stores, and small town architecture afford viewers the opportunity to once again "go home." Jim's art and writing have placed him among the nation's most important chroniclers of earlier twentieth century rural life.
