SouthernCarolina Alliance Launches New Podcast on Regional Issues

HAMPTON, SC – The SouthernCarolina Alliance has launched a new podcast featuring topics of regional interest related to economic development, job creation, workforce training and other activities that can improve opportunities and enhance the quality of life.

Titled “Behind the Golden Shovel”, the name comes from the familiar tool used by dignitaries to turn the soil in a ceremonial groundbreaking for a new project. The podcast is available on Apple, Google, Spotify and other popular podcast platforms.

“We expect this podcast to become a popular resource for those interested in the growth of our region and the issues that impact that growth,” Danny Black, SCA’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said. “Each episode will feature knowledgeable guests who will provide valuable insights in our efforts to build a better future for our citizens.”

The first episode released this week addresses the state legislature’s current deliberations on how to allocate $600 million in plutonium settlement funds from the federal government. The Department of Energy agreed to pay the money to the state after DOE failed to remove more than nine metric tons of plutonium from the state as agreed.

The podcast features State Senator Brad Hutto, State Representative Lonnie Hosey, Allendale County Council Chairman Rick Gooding, Barnwell County Council Chairman Harold Buckmon and Danny Black, president and chief executive officer of the SouthernCarolina Alliance.

The guests make the case as to why the bulk of the funds should go to Allendale, Barnwell and Aiken counties which are most impacted by SRS operations.

Kay Maxwell, SCA Vice President of Marketing, said future podcasts will cover a recently completed study of the region’s workforce development needs, SCA’s 25th Anniversary observance, and the benefits of the proposed Jasper Port.

SouthernCarolina Alliance represents seven South Carolina counties – Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton and Jasper.
