Dominion Energy Officially Dedicates South Carolina’s Largest Solar Farm in Jasper County
May 07, 2018
RIDGELAND, S.C. – Dominion Energy hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the state’s largest solar farm in Ridgeland, S.C. The 71.4-megawatt Solvay Solar Energy-Jasper County, S.C., solar array, and the 10-megawatt companion Ridgeland Solar location, are located in Jasper County, about 30 miles northeast of Savannah, Ga. The sites can produce enough energy to power 20,000 area homes.
“We are excited to be front-and-center in providing clean energy options to South Carolinians,” said Dan Weekley, vice president and general manager-Southern Pipeline Operations at Dominion Energy. “We are proud of the work we are doing in this state, and look forward to more opportunities to invest in and produce reliable energy in South Carolina.”
Dominion Energy’s Solvay and Ridgeland facilities deployed more than 300,000 solar panels on nearly 1,000 acres of land in Jasper County. South Carolina Electric & Gas has signed long-term power purchase agreements for the electricity produced at both sites. The output serves some of the utility’s 723,000 electric customers. Solvay – an international chemicals and advanced materials company with U.S. sites, among others, in Charleston, Greenville, Piedmont, Rock Hill and Spartanburg – is purchasing all of the associated renewable energy credits from the 71.4-megawatt facility for 15 years.
Energy production at the sites began late last year. Construction provided approximately 200 temporary jobs and nearly 10 full-time positions at the facility.
Solar energy generation is a key component of Dominion Energy's clean energy growth. Since 2013, the company has invested $3.6 billion to help bring online 1,600 megawatts of solar energy in nine states – more than 1,200 megawatts of which is company-owned. The 8.5 million solar panels produce enough power at peak solar output to serve about 400,000 homes and businesses.
